As I speak about Southern Africa Bible College in various places, one of the most common questions I am asked is, “What do graduates do when they finish the school?” As you can imagine the answer is as varied as the students that we have.
Our students have come from over 28 different countries. They dedicate three years of their lives to intensive study of Biblical text, church history, Biblical languages, and practical ministry. Since it is not a tradition for congregations to fully, financially support preachers there, students know that most of them will have to work secular jobs and preach or evangelize in an area.
So the short answer is our graduates are preachers, teachers, and evangelists in over 40 different countries. Some run non-profits that minister to those in need, others teach in preaching schools and Bible colleges across Southern Africa, still others plant new congregations. They take the passion for evangelism gained while at SABC and change the world one soul at a time.
One such graduate is Freddy Mayala (’10). Freddy and his wife Dada are from the Congo. They moved to South Africa for jobs, but found so much more. Not long after moving they met a Christian who taught them the gospel. A few months later, Freddy decided he wanted to be an evangelist. So they left their jobs and went to SABC.
The Mayala’s are planting a church about one mile from the SABC campus in an area known as Chief Luthuli Informal Settlement. After two years the congregation numbers about 50 members and Freddy conducts about 25 Bible studies per week. They have even sent a student to SABC. (see Tsepo on the next page.) Freddy supports himself and his family by doing small haul away jobs. His wife also works part-time. He has tried working a full-time job while working with the church, but finds the congregation suffers when he is unable to give it full attention.
Freddy is a great example of the success, struggles, and hardships that many SABC graduates face. If you would like to learn more about Freddy’s work and ministry you can watch a 15 minute video at www.southernafricabiblecollege.org/ videos. It is divided into two parts.
Please keep our students in your prayers and know that your support helps students, like Freddy, prepare for powerful service in the Kingdom. You may mail dona- tions to SABC-USA, 900 Echo Lane, Houston, TX 77024. Or you may give online at wwww.southernafricabiblecollege.org.
